Armley Jail illustration from the book
‘Hanged at Leeds’ by Steve Fielding
This song is a local variant of the much older confessional ballad known as Jack Hall or Sam Hall. In this version, which I picked up in Batley, our ‘hero’ called Willie Hall manages not to get hung ‘Cos the trap it didn’t fall’, but he still finishes up in hell with the Hangman for company.
Surprisingly, there are only two reports of the trapdoor failing to drop. The most famous of these being a Devonshire man called John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee, “The Man They Couldn’t Hang” who survived several attempts to hang him. The trapdoor of the scaffold failed to open three times at Exeter Prison on 23rd February 1885, and as a result his sentence was changed from death to life imprisonment. The executioner James Berry, who failed to hang him, was born in Heckmondwike only two miles from Batley. Berry carried out 131 hangings in seven years as an executioner and after his retirement in 1892 he toured as an evangelist. He wrote, two books ‘My Experiences as an Executioner’ in 1892 and ‘The Hangman’s Thoughts Above the Gallows’ in 1905.
Willie Hall
Oh my name is Willie Hall, Willie Hall, Willie Hall
Oh my name is Willie Hall,
An’ I’m only four foot tall,
An’ that’s bloody small, Blast yer eyes!
Oh I went to rob a shop, rob a shop, rob a shop,
Oh I went to rob a shop
In walked a bloody cop
An’ I thought I’d had me lot, Blast yer eyes!
So I hit him on the head, on the head, on the head
So I hit him on the head
Wi’ a bloody great lump of lead
An’ I left him there for dead, Blast yer eyes!
Well they clapped me in Armley Jail, Armley Jail, Armley Jail,
They say in Armley Jail,
I’ll drink no more Tetleys Ale
But I,ll be buggered if I do’nt fail, Blast yer eyes!
They say I’m bahn t’swing, bahn to swing, bahn to swing,
They say I’m bahn t’swing
On a bloody great length o’ string,
On a bloody great length o’ string, Blast yer eyes!
But I didn’t swing at all, swing at all, swing at all,
But I didn’t swing at all,
Cos the trap it didn’t fall,
Cos the trap it didn’t fall, Blast yer eyes!
But now I'm dahn in Hell, dahn in Hell, dahn in Hell,
But now I'm dahn in Hell,
But I’m not by mi sell,
For the Hangman’s here as well, Blast his eyes!
