Mick Haywood's Song Wordbook

Early Years

Ahr dustbin's full.

Yer Can't Put Yer Muck in Ahr Dustbin

I learnt this version of ‘You can't put your muck in our dustbin’ as a lad growing up in the South Yorkshire mining town Mexborough, in the late 1940s, early 1950s. It has an unusual last verse incorporating the first verse of the other local dialect song ‘Reight dahn in’ coil oil’, sometimes known as the ‘Barnsley Anthem’. Barnsley is only about ten miles from my birthplace Mexborough.
