Down in the Fields Where the Buttercups all Grow - Charlie Higgins 1931 record label
A song I noted down from an original recording made by Geoff Wood at Egremont Crab Fair in 1965. It was the winning song in the Comic Song section of the singing contest. It was performed in the competition by a singer named Miley Smith.
It is almost identical to the recording made by the Manchester born 1930’s Music Hall comedian, who always performed in a top hat, plus fours and brown boots, Charlie Higgins. He released it on the Broadcast record label in 1931.
Down in the Fields Where the Buttercups Do Grow
Oh, Mary Green loves me and I love her true,
We kiss when we meet like true-lovers do,
Beneath the plantation where clear meadows run,
We sit in the dark and we have lots of fun,
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
Oh, Mary she thought I was bashful and slow,
But she changed her mind when I let myself go,
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
We went for a walk down a long winding path
The rhubarb moved sideways to let us walk past
We walked ‘neath the trees and the, birds up above
Were all busy dropping their tokens of love.
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
Me girl friend and I went behind a haystack
When a bumblebee flew down the small of her back
I saw what had happened and in my distress
I shoved me right hand down the back of her dress.
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
The songbirds were singing of the day newly born
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
And when cows and sheep have been round there a bit
It's not a nice place for a lady to sit.
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
A cow licking Mary it tickled her so
She thought it was me and said, "Don't slavver Joe.
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
A ten gallon barrel on top of the hill
Came crashing towards us me heart it stood still
But Mary stood bravely unflinching and true
Her legs were so bandy the barrel went through.
Down in the field where the buttercups do grow!
